Primal Supplements: Liver Pills

August 17, 2010

Uni-Liver. You're just going to have to trust me on this one.

Eat your liver!

The words of every old school cartoon parent to her children, and very likely, your grandmother to you.  Why is this?  Why do they want us to suffer?

They don’t want you to suffer!  The liver is like the multivitamin of an animal; outrageously dense in nutrition.  All this nutrition and healthiness (yes that’s a word) comes with one HUGE catch: liver tastes horrible and I’ve never met anyone that could cook it so that it didn’t have the consistency of 2 day old chewing gum (it’s powdery if you’ve never experienced it).

So what do you do?  Simple.  Go out and get yourself some Universal Uni-Liver.  Desiccated and defatted Argentinian Bovine Liver.  All the nutrition without any of the taste.  Rich in choline (good for leaning out), and an awesome amino acid profile, this is my prefered pre/post workout supplement.  The reason Liver supplementation is such a good idea is for the sum of the parts, not the parts themselves.  Yes, it has amino acids and vitamins and minerals.  If even has nucleic acids, lipotropics (things that break down fat, like choline), antioxidants, cytochrome P450 (an enzyme involved in steroid production and detoxification).

Anecdotally, liver has been used by bodybuilders and powerlifters for decades to increase strength, enhance appetites, reduce recovery times and fatigue, support liver function, and detoxify the body.  It’s also an effective blood builder (based on liver tab’s ability to exert “hematinic activity” or improve hemoglobin levels and number of erythrocytes).

Liver is also a tremendous source of the vitamin B12. B12 plays an important role in cellular division and is vital to growth and energy creation from fat and carbos.  The interesting thing is that while B-12 is this awesome vitamin, oral supplementation doesn’t seem to have the effect of either food containing B-12 or injections of B-12.  This is where the desiccated liver comes in.  Since these tablets are whole-food, containing enzymes and co-factors and whatever, your body can properly digest this powerhouse vitamin and gain massive benefit from it.

Liver pills are a supplement that are directly in-line with our Primal roots and can help you get stronger, feel better and recover quicker.  I give Liver Pills the Primal Bodybuilding seal of approval.

Official answer before you ask: I get nothing from the sale of Universal Uni-Liver.  I just like the concept of ingesting more animal liver and every time I take this supplement for extended periods of time, I seem to get stronger and feel better overall.  It could be coincidence, but as you can see, there is some science to back it up.

FYI:

  • 1 Tablet = 30 grain = 2 grams
  • 20% of each tablet are the 3 BCAA’s (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) + Gutamine
  • I typically take 6 tablets  before and after each workout (12 total), you could go as high as 10-15 before and after
  • I have seen guys take up to 30 pills per day, any way you can imagine.  Experiment and see.
  • The pills are large, so take that under advisement
  • 500 Tablets costs around $15-20 max.  At 12/workout x 4 workouts per week, that bottle will last 2.5 months (10 weeks).  Easily one of the cheapest most effective supplements you can pick up.

WORK: Dynamic Upper

  1. Z-Health Warmup
  2. Shoulder Work
  3. Jump Rope
  4. Dynamic-Effort Bench Press
    • Work up to 8 x 3 @ 50% 1RM

  5. As many sets as possible in 10 minutes of (scale to your ability, but push it):

GRUB:

It’s another Chipotle night for me.  I’m so lazy and have not been shopping.  I hope you are more disciplined than I in this regard.  If you aren’t, enjoy the grass-fed goodness that is a Chipotle Burritobol.

Live long and prosper
